Quite a long time ago, Mike Yuhas first began his exploration into non-commercial radio when a favorite commercial station suddenly changed its format, to prepackaged schlock. He started on the air at WUSB, in Stony Brook, New York in 1980. His early programs reflected the style of that ill-fated commercial station, but began leaning toward good jazz, reggae, ska, new age, and, eventually, folk stuff. After just a couple years on WUSB, he moved out of the area, to Woodstock, New York, where he'd occasionally drive up to the top of a mountain to pick up the faintest wisps of WUSB's signal. Not long after, a job change moved him to Philadelphia, where he listened to all the cool programming on WXPN and Gene Shay's show on WHYY. Another job change brought him to Milwaukee, where he bemoaned the fact that there was precious little folk radio available -- the best of which was Wisconsin Public Radio's "Simply Folk." Often, he'd invite people over for dinner, and after consuming vast quantities of homemade Mexican or Chinese food, he'd say, "you gotta hear this," and another CD was thrown on the stereo. It was obvious that although the kid was out of radio, the radio wasn't out of the kid. After some prodding from well-meaning friends, he got himself a shift on WYMS. There, he's made a name for himself as the fellow who's always bringing in one folk artist or another for some discussion and live music. He's been active in the North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance, frequently posts his playlists on the folkdj-l discussion list (in fact, he's the listowner), and generally despises writing about himself in the third person. Some of Mike's other interests include railroading and performing various minor repairs at Janet's house (which was sold in April 1996 when they got married!).
